Overview

What are Google Shopping and Performance Max ads?

Google Shopping ads are the product boxes you see on Google with a photo, a price and a store name. Someone searches for "linen duvet cover queen", and instead of reading a text ad, they see your actual product next to a few competitors. They already know what it looks like and what it costs before they click, which is why Shopping traffic tends to be closer to buying than most other ad traffic.

Performance Max (often shortened to PMax) is Google's automated campaign type. It uses the same product feed but can show your ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover and Maps from one campaign. Google's systems decide where each impression goes based on the goals and data you give them.

Both run on one thing: your product feed in Google Merchant Center. If the feed is weak, the ads are weak, no matter how clever the bidding is. That is why our Google Shopping ads management starts with the feed, not with the budget.

This service is built for online stores selling physical products, usually on Shopify or WooCommerce, in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and parts of the EU. If you sell services or want leads rather than orders, our Google Ads management service is the better fit.

What's included in Google Shopping ads management?

Merchant Center setup and health checks

We set up or review your Google Merchant Center account: business information, shipping and return policies, tax settings where required, website verification and the link to Google Ads. Why it matters: Merchant Center is where Google decides whether your products are allowed to show at all. Missing shipping details or an unverified website can quietly stop products from appearing.

Product feed quality

We work through your feed product by product where it counts: titles, descriptions, product categories, GTINs (barcodes), brand, color, size, material and other attributes. Why it matters: Shopping ads have no keywords. Google matches searches to your products mostly by reading your titles and attributes. A title like "The Classic" tells Google nothing; "Men's Leather Chelsea Boots, Brown, Waterproof" tells it a lot.

Fixing disapprovals and warnings

We review every disapproved or limited product, find the cause (image issues, price mismatches, policy flags, missing identifiers) and fix it at the source in your store or feed. Why it matters: a disapproved product earns nothing. We cannot promise Google will approve every item, since that decision is Google's, but we will tell you exactly why something is blocked and what we did about it.

Standard Shopping vs Performance Max

We help you decide which campaign type fits your store, or how to run both. Standard Shopping gives more control and clearer reporting. Performance Max gives Google more room to find buyers across channels but shows you less about where the money went. Why it matters: picking the wrong one for your data and budget is one of the most common reasons product ads underperform.

Product grouping by margin

We use custom labels in your feed to group products by profit margin, price band, best sellers or seasonality, then set budgets and targets per group. Why it matters: a $20 accessory with a thin margin and a $300 product with a healthy one should not be treated the same. Grouping lets your budget follow profit, not just revenue.

Search terms and negative keywords

For Standard Shopping, we review the search terms report regularly and add negative keywords to stop spend on irrelevant searches. For Performance Max, Google has been adding more search term insights and negative keyword controls over time; we use whatever your account currently offers. Why it matters: without this, a store selling "wool rugs" can pay for clicks from people searching "how to clean wool rug".

Conversion value tracking

We set up and test purchase tracking that passes the actual order value to Google Ads, not just a count of sales. Why it matters: Shopping and PMax bidding depends on knowing which sales are worth more. If tracking reports every order as the same value, or double-counts purchases, Google's automation optimizes toward the wrong thing.

Standard Shopping or Performance Max: which should you use?

There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one without looking at your store is guessing. Here is how we think about it:

  • Standard Shopping suits stores that want tight control, have a small catalog, a modest budget, or limited conversion history. You see search terms clearly and can steer spend product by product.
  • Performance Max suits stores with reliable conversion tracking, a decent volume of sales and good creative assets (images, videos, headlines). It can reach people across more of Google, but it needs data to learn from.
  • Both together can work for larger catalogs, for example PMax for proven best sellers and Standard Shopping for testing new products or protecting low-margin lines.

Think of Standard Shopping as driving a manual car and PMax as an automatic with a very confident navigator. The automatic is easier when the map is good. When the map (your data) is poor, you want your hands on the gears.

Shopify and WooCommerce product feeds

Most small online stores run on Shopify or WooCommerce, and both connect to Merchant Center.

  • Shopify: Google's sales channel app for Shopify syncs products to Merchant Center. We check what it sends, fill gaps with metafields or a supplemental feed, and fix variant issues such as missing sizes or colors.
  • WooCommerce: we use Google's official WooCommerce extension or a reputable feed plugin, then check field mapping, variable products and identifiers.
  • Supplemental feeds: when your store platform cannot hold an attribute cleanly, a Google Sheet supplemental feed lets us improve titles or add custom labels without changing your live product pages.

If your store itself needs work, such as slow pages, confusing variants or weak product pages, our Shopify development team can fix that alongside the ads.

How we work

  1. Free growth audit. We look at your store, Merchant Center and any existing Google Ads account and send you a written audit within 2 business days.
  2. Fixed-price quote. You get a clear quote covering setup and the monthly fee. Nothing starts until you approve it.
  3. Access, not ownership. You keep ownership of your Google Ads, Merchant Center and Analytics accounts. We request user access, and you can remove it any time.
  4. Feed and tracking first. We fix the feed, disapprovals and conversion tracking before spending meaningful budget.
  5. Launch and learn. Campaigns go live with sensible budgets and product groups. The first several weeks are about gathering clean data.
  6. Ongoing management. Regular search term reviews, bid and budget changes, feed updates as your catalog changes, and new product launches.
  7. Monthly report. A plain-English report showing spend, sales, conversion value, return on ad spend and what we plan to change next.

What affects the price?

Google Shopping and Performance Max management starts from $750/mo. Your ad spend is separate and is paid by you directly to Google, from an account in your name. Things that move the price up or down:

  • Catalog size and how many products need feed work
  • How many countries, languages or currencies you sell in
  • The state of your existing account and tracking
  • Whether you also need Search campaigns or YouTube video assets
  • How often your catalog changes (seasonal ranges, frequent new arrivals)

The monthly service is month-to-month with no lock-in. Your quote lists exactly what is included before anything starts.

What we can and cannot promise

No honest agency can guarantee a return on ad spend, a number of sales, or that Google will approve every product. Click costs, competition, your prices and your store's checkout all play a part, and Google changes how its systems work regularly. What we do guarantee: the work described in your quote, a fixed price, a monthly report you can actually read, replies within 1 business day, and full ownership of every account staying with you.

Who is this not a good fit for?

  • Businesses selling services, not products. Shopping ads need a product feed.
  • Stores selling products Google restricts or prohibits in Shopping, such as certain health supplements, weapons or some regulated goods. We will check policy before you spend anything.
  • Stores with very few products, very low prices and very thin margins, where ad costs are likely to eat the profit. We will say so in the audit.
  • Anyone who wants us to own or control the ad account. We do not work that way.

How it connects with our other services

Shopping ads send people to your product pages, so those pages need to do their job. Many stores pair this service with ecommerce SEO, so the same product data that feeds Google Shopping also helps free organic listings. If you also want to reach shoppers on Facebook and Instagram, see Meta ads management. Not sure where to start? Request a free growth audit and we will tell you honestly whether Shopping ads make sense for your store right now.

What's included

Built to bring in clients, not just look good.

01

Merchant Center setup

We set up or review Merchant Center, policies, shipping and the Google Ads link, so your products are eligible to show instead of being quietly blocked by a missing setting.

02

Feed quality work

Clear titles, accurate attributes and correct identifiers help Google match your products to the right searches, because Shopping ads have no keywords to fall back on.

03

Disapproval fixes

We find why products are disapproved or limited and fix the cause in your store or feed, then explain what changed so the same problem does not come back.

04

Margin-based grouping

Custom labels group products by margin, price or best sellers, so budget and targets follow profit rather than treating every product in your catalog the same.

05

Search term control

We review search terms and add negative keywords where the campaign type allows it, cutting spend on searches that were never going to buy from you.

06

Conversion value tracking

Purchase tracking that passes real order values to Google Ads and is tested, so automated bidding learns from accurate data instead of guesses or duplicate sales.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I need Google Merchant Center to run Shopping ads?

Yes. Shopping ads and the product side of Performance Max both pull from a product feed in Google Merchant Center. If you do not have an account yet, we set it up in your name and link it to your Google Ads account.

Is Performance Max better than Standard Shopping?

Neither is better for every store. Performance Max can reach more people across Google but needs solid conversion data and gives you less visibility. Standard Shopping gives more control, which often suits smaller budgets or newer stores. We recommend one, the other or both after looking at your data.

Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?

Common causes are price or availability mismatches between your site and feed, missing identifiers like GTINs, image problems, missing shipping or return information, and policy flags. We check each issue in Merchant Center diagnostics and fix it at the source.

Does this work with Shopify and WooCommerce?

Yes. Both connect to Merchant Center through Google's own apps or extensions. We check what each sends, fill in missing attributes and use a supplemental feed when the store platform cannot hold the data cleanly.

How much should I spend on Google Shopping ads?

It depends on your catalog, margins, competition and how quickly you want data. We suggest a starting budget in your quote. You pay Google directly, from your own account, and our fee is separate.

Can you guarantee a return on ad spend?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Results depend on your prices, products, competition and site. We guarantee the agreed work, a fixed fee, honest monthly reporting and your full ownership of every account.
