Overview

What is e-commerce SEO?

E-commerce SEO is the work of getting your product and collection pages found in Google by people who are ready to buy. It is different from SEO for a service business. A plumber might need a dozen pages to rank. An online store can have hundreds or thousands of product pages, filters that create endless URL variations, and product details that change every season.

Our e-commerce SEO service is a monthly program for small and mid-sized online stores, mainly on Shopify and WooCommerce. We work on the pages that make you money, fix the technical issues that are specific to stores, and write content that answers the questions shoppers ask before they buy.

One honest note up front: SEO takes months, not weeks. Google needs time to recrawl your pages, and rankings usually build gradually. If you need sales next week, paid ads will get you there faster. SEO is the slower channel that keeps working when you stop paying for each click.

What is included in e-commerce SEO?

Keyword research by buyer intent

Not every search is a shopping search. Someone typing "how to clean leather boots" is learning. Someone typing "waterproof leather boots women size 8" is ready to buy. We group keywords by intent and map each group to the right page: buying searches to products and collections, research searches to guides.

Why it matters: ranking for a search that never turns into a sale costs effort and brings little back. Matching intent to page type puts your effort where revenue is.

Product page optimization

We improve titles, descriptions, headings, image alt text and URLs, and we rewrite thin or copied manufacturer descriptions. Good product copy covers materials, sizing, fit, care, shipping and returns in a way people can scan.

Why it matters: if your description is the same text every other retailer pasted from the supplier, Google has little reason to pick your page over theirs.

Collection and category pages

Collection pages often target the most valuable searches, like "linen shirts for men". We add short, useful intro copy, clean headings and sensible internal links without pushing the products below a wall of text.

Why it matters: a collection page with nothing but a product grid gives Google very little to understand what the page is about.

Faceted navigation and duplicate URLs

Filters for size, color, price and sort order are great for shoppers but can create thousands of near-identical URLs. We decide which filtered pages deserve to be indexed (some do, like "black running shoes") and keep the rest out using canonical tags, noindex or crawl rules, depending on your platform.

Why it matters: without control, Google can spend its time crawling endless filter combinations instead of your real products, and ranking signals get split across duplicate pages.

Product schema and review markup

We add or fix structured data for products: name, price, availability, brand, and ratings where you collect genuine reviews. Review markup must reflect real reviews that are visible on the page; we will not mark up reviews that do not exist.

Why it matters: correct product markup can make your listings eligible for details like price, stock status and star ratings in search results. Google decides whether to show them, so eligibility is the honest promise.

Image SEO

We compress and resize images, use modern formats where your platform supports them, write descriptive file names and alt text, and make sure the main product image loads quickly.

Why it matters: stores are image-heavy, so images are often the main cause of slow pages. Well-labeled images can also show up in Google Images, where many shoppers browse.

Internal linking

We link related products, collections and guides so that important pages are easy to reach. Think of a good shop assistant: "If you like these, have a look at the matching belt." That, but in code.

Why it matters: internal links help Google find and prioritize pages, and they lift the average order when shoppers find related items.

Content that answers pre-purchase questions

Shoppers search a lot before buying: sizing, comparisons, "is X worth it", care instructions. We plan and write buying guides, size guides and FAQ sections that answer those questions and link to the right products.

Why it matters: these pages reach people earlier in their decision and reduce the doubts that cause abandoned carts and returns.

Google Merchant Center free listings

Google can show your products for free in the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces, but only if your product feed is in Google Merchant Center. We set up or clean up your feed, fix disapprovals where we can, and keep product data consistent with your site.

Why it matters: free listings are extra visibility at no click cost. Approval is Google's decision, so we fix what Google flags rather than promise a result. If you later want paid Shopping ads, the same feed powers Google Shopping ads.

Shopify and WooCommerce specifics

Shopify creates its sitemap and robots.txt automatically and adds canonical tags to most pages, which helps. It also has quirks: products can be reached through collection URLs as well as their main URL, some themes link to the duplicate version, and apps can add heavy scripts that slow every page. We fix theme links, edit the robots.txt template when needed, and review apps for speed. Our Shopify development team handles deeper theme work.

WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so it is very flexible and very easy to misconfigure. We look at tag and attribute archives, filter plugins that create crawlable URLs, pagination, the SEO plugin's settings, and hosting speed.

How we work

  1. Free audit. We start with a free growth audit of your store, delivered in two business days.
  2. Fixed-price plan. You get a written plan and monthly fee before any work starts.
  3. First month: foundations. Technical fixes, Search Console and Merchant Center checks, keyword research and page mapping.
  4. Ongoing months: pages and content. We optimize priority collections and products, then add guides, working through an agreed list.
  5. Monthly report. A plain-English report on what we did, what changed in Search Console and Analytics, and what is next.

Everything happens inside accounts you own. The service is month-to-month, with no lock-in contract.

How much does e-commerce SEO cost?

E-commerce SEO starts from $750/mo. The fixed monthly price depends on the number of products and collections, how much content you want each month, the state of your store's technical setup, and whether your feed needs major work. Large catalogs with filter problems may need a one-off technical project first. See pricing for how our quotes work.

Can you guarantee first-page rankings?

No. Nobody outside Google controls rankings, and any agency that guarantees them is guessing or gaming you. What we guarantee is the agreed work each month, at the agreed price, a clear report, and that you own everything we build. Most stores should expect to give SEO at least several months before judging it.

Who is e-commerce SEO not a good fit for?

  • Stores that need sales this month. Start with paid ads and add SEO alongside.
  • Stores with very few products and no plans to grow. A one-off technical SEO audit and some good copy may be enough.
  • Dropshipping stores reselling the same items as hundreds of others with supplier descriptions and no plan to differentiate. SEO cannot fix a product that has no reason to rank.

How e-commerce SEO fits with ads and your store

SEO and paid ads work well together. Ads bring sales while SEO builds, and ad data shows which searches actually convert, which tells us where SEO effort will pay off. If your store itself needs work before SEO can do much, such as a slow theme or a confusing checkout, we will say so in the audit and quote that separately. Not sure which comes first? Ask for the free audit and we will tell you.

What's included

Buyer-intent keywords

We group searches by whether people are learning or ready to buy, then map each group to the right page, so your effort goes where sales actually happen.

Product page optimization

Clear titles, original descriptions, sizing, care and shipping details. Pages that answer shoppers' questions give Google a reason to choose yours over copied supplier text.

FAQ

Common questions.

How long does e-commerce SEO take to work?

Usually months, not weeks. Technical fixes can be picked up within a few weeks, but rankings for competitive product searches tend to build gradually. Plan on at least several months before judging results, and use paid ads if you need sales sooner.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Shopify handles many basics well, including automatic sitemaps and canonical tags. It still needs work: duplicate product URLs through collections, theme and app speed, thin collection pages and copied product descriptions are common issues we fix.

Should I write my own product descriptions instead of using the manufacturer's?

Yes, at least for your most important products. When many stores use the same supplier text, Google has little reason to prefer your page. Original descriptions with real details on fit, materials and use also help shoppers decide.

How do I get my products on Google Shopping for free?

You need a Google Merchant Center account with an approved product feed. Once set up, products can appear in free listings on the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces. Google decides what is approved and shown, so we fix the issues it flags.

Do I need to sign a long contract for e-commerce SEO?

No. Our e-commerce SEO is month-to-month at a fixed monthly price. You own your store, accounts and all content we create, so you can stop at any time and keep everything.

Can you guarantee my products will rank on page one?

No honest agency can. Rankings depend on Google, your competitors and your products. We guarantee the agreed work, the agreed price and clear monthly reporting.
